Frugal shopping continued: Smashbox cosmetics sale… and happy Cyber Monday, everyone!

Dork Tower comic - Cyber Monday

It's that time again... the Internet version of Black Friday!

Introduction

Happy Cyber Monday, everyone!

For those of you who haven’t already splurged enough on Friday (or through the weekend), Cyber Monday is here for you to spend a lil’ more! Today is the day where retailers are officially given free rein to go all out offering online sales… that is, if they haven’t already used the excuse of “Black Friday” to start pumping out online offers since Friday (and, as previously mentioned in my Black Friday blog post, there has been a growing trend over time where more and more stores are opting for the latter scenario).

As with Black Friday, I once again went through the process of mining through Cyber Monday email offers from my favorite retailers. However, this year I didn’t notice any Cyber Monday deals that were particularly enticing… that was a bit disappointing. But maybe it’s for the best, considering how much money I ended up spending later that evening at a cosmetics warehouse sale!

Lisas Cosmetics beauty products warehouse sale flyer 2010

It's almost Christmas... time for another Lisa's Cosmetics warehouse sale, with savings of up to 80% on my favorite makeup brand, Smashbox!

Every year around Christmas time, there’s a cosmetics warehouse sale in town that offers amazing prices on brand name makeup such as Smashbox and Elizabeth Arden, and ridiculously low prices on fragrances, nail polish, shampoo, skincare, hair dye products… basically anything you can think of, they have it there on sale at warehouse prices!

I dropped by after work with my mom to check out the sale, and basically walked away with $150+ worth of cosmetics and nail polish. Eek! And that’s with all the nail polishes being only $0.99 each. Although, it should be noted that I did end up buying bottle after bottle after bottle of every single nail polish color that I could get my hands on. I mean, c’mon, $0.99 each!! Plus, I’m currently all about changing nail colors every couple of days for kicks, so this is a great way to do that while staying frugal. So yeah, even though the items were dirt cheap, everything does add up.

Tracy Reese for Sally Hansen 2009 salon nail lacquers

Sally Hansen's "Salon" nail lacquers were only 99 cents each at the cosmetics warehouse sale!

Although it should be noted that most of the items that I bought were Smashbox makeup products, and even at “warehouse prices” Smashbox cosmetics are significantly pricier than most of the cheap stuff that they also offered, like $1.99 for all makeup items from brands Anabelle or Red Earth. I personally swear by Smashbox makeup through-and-through, and refuse to wear the cheap stuff… which is why this sale was perfect for me.

So even though I didn’t technically take advantage of any official Cyber Monday deals, I did end up walking away on Cyber Monday having my need for retail therapy completely satisfied… just from going to that cosmetics sale!

Here is a summary of some of the great beauty finds that I walked away with today. Consider it an “unboxing” of sorts. Enjoy!

What does “Black Friday” mean to you? Lining up for hours to fight strangers over door crasher deals? That’s silly. Next time, do it the online way… with coupons!

Natalie Dee Comics - Black Friday shopping

Ah, yes. The sacrifices one has to make in order to get land those pesky Black Friday deals!

Happy Black Friday, everyone!

That’s right, that day is here. Y’know, the one day of the year where stores across the US all simultaneously go berzerk slashing prices, thereby forcing grown men and women to act like children, getting into physical altercations with strangers just to get their hands on the “limited number” of door crasher sale items that they had stood in line in the cold for hours (or even days!) to get.

Seriously, have you seen some of these pictures of Black Friday lines? It’s utter insanity! Check it out.

Photo collage of insane Black Friday lines

Photo collage depicting the utter insanity that is Black Friday

Now, I’m not saying people shouldn’t take advantage of rock-bottom Black Friday sale prices. I mean, I’m all for discounts and savings. Me and frugality? We’re best friends. All I’m saying is, it just doesn’t make any logical sense to stand around for hours at the crack of dawn (I’m not even going to acknowledge those who would stand in line for days… don’t get me started!), all so you can fight, claw and push your way to those coveted door crasher items.

Do you know what does make sense? Taking advantage of online Black Friday discounts! Why, you ask?

Perks to online shopping on Black Friday

  1. Shop from the comfort of home
  2. >> Why freeze to death while standing in line for hours (or days!), outside on a cold November morning (old days!)? If you shop online on Black Friday, you won’t even need to change from your pajamas!
    >> Plus, the chances of you getting into a physical altercation with a stranger are zero to none. Whereas if you were to hit the stores in person? If you want to get your hands on those door crasher deals, good luck trying to avoid a fight!

  3. Access to “online-only” Black Friday deals that are as good as (if not better than!) the in-store offers
  4. >> With each passing year, more and more retailers are going down the online route. So y’know those coveted door crasher in-store Black Friday deals that people stand in line for hours to get? Retailers are slowly starting to post those same deals online. That means you’ll likely able to get equal access to those door crasher deals, but from your computer!
    >> Retailers are also starting to offer Black Friday deals that are exclusively available to online shoppers only! So if you neglect to go down the online shopping route, you may actually miss out on the best Black Friday sales available!

  5. …there are many more perks, too many to list here!

Like I said, with each passing year, more and more people will be turning to online shopping in order to take advantage of Black Friday discounts. We’re pretty much almost reached that point already in 2010. How do i know this? Because I tried checking out the online Black Friday offers for Victoria’s Secret during my lunch break at work on Friday, and discovered the entire Victoria’s Secret website down!! Can you imagine? A company of that caliber, having its entire online shopping site crash due to an overload of visitors… on the busiest shopping day of the year!

Victorias Secret website down on Black Friday error message

There were so many people checking out the online Black Friday deals on Victoria's Secret, they temporarily crashed the entire website!

Since I’m both a die hard shopper (let’s just say, if shopping was like martial arts, I would have a black belt), and I work in the online shopping industry, Black Friday is like Christmas and my birthday rolled into one… and I’m not even American! But like I said earlier, more and more retailers are rolling out their Black Friday sales online, and most ship to Canada. I spent the majority of tonight mining through offers from my favorite retailers, and here are some notable ones that caught my eye…

A night at home, cooking my fave hand-me-down recipe while learning about Prince William and Queen-to-be Kate

It’s Wednesday… a.k.a. hump day. Blah day. Currently 0 °Celsius outside (that’s 32 °Fahrenheit for you Americans out there!). Brrr. I hate this time of year, when the temperature is just starting to dip below freezing, and you can just feel the snow coming any day now.

So what’s the best thing to do on a night like tonight? Why, cook my favorite hand-me-down recipe (one I’ve cooked more times than any other recipe I’ve tried my hand at, bar none), then plop my butt on the couch to watch CBC’s Passionate Eye documentary on Prince William and the future Queen-to-be, Kate Middleton, of course!

Personally, I love documentaries. Can’t get enough of them. And when it comes to documentaries, it doesn’t get any better than The Passionate Eye documentary series on CBC.

As I’m sure you’re well aware, the whole world has been abuzz with royalty fever over the past week, ever since Prince Williams announced his engagement to Queen-to-be Kate Middleton last Tuesday. I gotta say, I never really followed the whole “Kate and William” on-again, off-again relationship. And I’m not going to pretend that I’m suddenly a Prince William fanatic. But, hey… the documentary was playing, and nothing better was on TV! So I ended up watching it, and I learned quite a lot about the royal couple.

For one thing, I had no idea Kate and William met at the University of St Andrews, where they were both enrolled in a degree course in art history. Art history! That’s what I studied and majored in while in university! And what’s even funnier, Prince William eventually got fed up with art history (even though Kate studied it all the way through to graduation), and switched his main subject to geography. Geography! That’s what I studied and minored in while in university!

I know, I know. It’s just a coincidence and it’s stupid to read anything into it. But I just thought that was a pretty neat tidbit of info to have learned today. I mean, like I said earlier… it is that kind of day today. As in, uneventful.

(P.S. I think Kate Middleton is really pretty. So, Prince William… good onya, mate!)

Anyway, going back to my favorite hand-me-down recipe. Long before I found an interest in cooking, and long before I fell in love with trying my hand at pretty much any recipe that I came across… my mom had taught me how to cook the classic Chinese dish of Tomato Beef Stew with Stir Fried Eggs. For me, this recipe always brings with it memories of comfort, and the feeling of home. It’s a great dish to make on cold nights (like tonight!), ’cause it warms you all over.

Like I had said before, this is my favorite hand-me-down recipe, bar none. I’ve never cooked another dish as many times as this one. So bear with me as I try my best to recite the details of the recipe that’s pretty much ingrained permanently in my memory!

Karina’s Hand-me-down “Tomato Beef Stew with Stir Fried Eggs” Recipe

Ingredients:
Marinade…

  • 2 tsp soy sauce
  • Splash of sesame oil
  • Splash of rice wine
  • Sprinkle of sugar
  • Generous sprinkle of corn starch

Stir Fry…

  • 1/2 lb sliced beef (for stir frying)
  • Vegetable oil (enough to coat pan for stir frying)
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 clove garlic (minced)
  • A little ginger (finely chopped)
  • 3 to 4 tomatoes (sliced)
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • salt & sugar (to taste)

Directions:

  • Combine marinade ingredients together with beef; leave aside
  • Scramble eggs in a bowl
  • Heat frying pan on medium heat
  • Coat heated pan with oil

  • Coat heated pan with additional oil

First, I had doubts on whether I was a coffee or tea person. Now, I’m questioning whether or not I’m a hater or lover of the color purple!

A girl's love affair with the color purple

This girl? Why, she's got a newfound love for the color purple!

If you’ll remember a while back, I had blogged about whether or not I could possibly be a tea person (considering I’ve lived my whole life convinced that I was nothing short of the quintessential coffee lover).

Now, I’m starting to question my love of all things green in color.

And you know what that means? That means it’s time for another entry in my A Girl’s Love Affair With… blog series! This time, it involves a story about a girl’s love affair with the color purple.

Style post bulletin board - Roots Purple Seed color apparel

Today's featured top fashion find: All Roots apparel in 'Purple Seed' color!

For as long as I could remember, green has been (and, I once thought, always will be) my all-time favorite color. I have more items of green clothing than 10 people’s wardrobes combined into 1. And then there’s our home decor. Everything’s green!

Karinas Green Home Decor Collage

A glimpse into my love affair with green home decor...

Sample list of green home decor items that I own…
  • Green CD/DVD shelves
  • Picture frames with green photo mats
  • Green-tinted sofa slipcover
  • Decorative cushions in various shades of green
  • Green accent side chair
  • Green ottoman
  • Green coffee side tables
  • Custom green-painted furniture, including a green kitchen cart & green dining room chair
  • Green window curtains used as closet screens
  • Green bulletin boards customized & transformed into jewelry hanging storage devices
  • Green towels & bath linens
  • Green fruit bowls, mixing bowls & other green dinnerware
  • ..even green food bowls for my pet bunny!

I may have been an extreme lover of all things green. But on the opposite end of the spectrum, I’ve also been an extreme despiser of all things purple. Not really sure why, but the color purple never did it for me. In the past, it would’ve been a rare sight indeed to see me in purple items of clothing, or to find anything remotely purple in color in our apartment. That is, until recently.

I fell in love with the jewel-toned teal blue, green, and royal purple colors of Crate and Barrel's Marimekko Tilkkula Jewel bed linens

I think it all started when my husband and I got married, and moved into our new apartment. Along with the move, I had decided to restock our entire supply of bed linens, towels, home decor items… pretty much purchasing brand new items for all things domestic.

Walmart purple Kirby fabric pattern cushions

My beloved purple "Kirby" fabric pattern cushions that I had discovered (of all places!) in Walmart

When choosing our new bedding pattern, I somehow became mesmerized by the jewel-toned teal blue, green, royal purple, and brown colors of the Erja Hirvi-designed Marimekko Tilkkula Jewel bed linens from Crate and Barrel. Something about the overlapping geometric rectangles of vibrant blue, green, purple, and brown colors really drew me in. And while the rest of the colors perfectly complemented the blues and greens of my home decor or the browns of my wooden furniture, the purple really stood out as a color that didn’t belong.

So what did I do? Instead of buying a different bedding pattern like most people would, I decided to go for the Marimekko Tilkkula Jewel bed linens anyway. And how did I make up for the lack of purple in my home decor? Why, buy more purple home decor items, of course!

It started off with the bed linens. Not too long after that, I found myself buying decorative pillow shams in matching teal blue, olive green and royal purple colors as those used the bedding. And then, of course there are those purple “Kirby” fabric cushions that I had blogged about a while back.

Roots purple hoodie photo collage

One of the first pieces of purple clothing that I've purchased in years!

Why am I suddenly bringing this up, you ask? Well, one of my coworkers also works part-time at Roots, and she was generous enough to offer me a 50% off Friends and Family Sale invite card, valid on all regular priced items this past weekend!

I normally don’t shop at Roots, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. But oh wow, I totally fell in love with every item of clothing that they had in store that featured this beautiful shade of royal blue/purple.

Karinas Roots purple winter trench coat

Here I am, modeling my new Roots purple winter trench coat!

Just looked on their website, and I believe their name for that color is “Purple Seed.” So yeah, I totally went all out and practically bought out their entire stock of clothing items in that gorgeous shade of purple.

Note: I still can’t believe I’m using the words “gorgeous” and “purple” next to each other!

Anyway, there was this one item, the pièce de résistance, that I fell head over heels in love with: a purple fitted knee-length insulated trench coat that can only be described as H-O-T. Seriously, HOT.

Unfortunately, there was no tag attached to the jacket so I don’t know the name of it. I looked everywhere online (both on the official Roots website and via Google Image Search… but no luck in finding a picture of the coat anywhere. So I took a picture of myself modeling the jacket instead! Check it out. Hot, right?

It’s not Thanksgiving or Christmas, but that doesn’t mean I can’t bake an 8 lb honey glazed ham for kicks!

Baked Ham comic - Winnie the Pooh inventing the first honey roasted ham

Who can resist honey-roasted ham? Not even Winnie the Pooh can!

I know baking a honey glazed bone-in ham seems like something you should be doing during Thanksgiving or Christmas, when you’re serving a family meal for like 10+ people. But hey, if I want to bake an 8 lb ham on a regular Saturday night, what’s wrong with that? And that’s exactly what I did!

A while back, I had blogged about my obsession with recreating pseudo home-cooked Southern comfort food from Cracker Barrel restaurant, and how I had successfully reproduced their Hash Brown Casserole menu item for my office potluck party with a copycat recipe.

Well, today I had decided to make that Hash Brown Casserole again… except this time, for my husband and I to eat at home (since there was nothing leftover last time, so Ian never had the chance to try it!). And it only made sense to pair the casserole with a baked ham… considering every time I visit Cracker Barrel, all I get is their Sugar Cured Ham.

I found this recipe on AllRecipes.com for a Honey Glazed Ham that can’t be beat! I mean, I’ve never baked a ham before in my life. But this recipe was easy enough to follow, and pretty much foolproof. The end result is a super juicy ham, with a glaze that’s the perfect level of tangy sweetness.

Before trying my hand at this recipe, I looked into a few websites with “How-Tos?” on baking a ham. For anyone interested in baking their own ham for the first time, here are some tips that I found useful…

Tips for baking a ham:

  1. How to choose the “rawness” level of your ham? (as called for in the recipe)
  2. >> Fully-cooked ham: Ready-to-eat ham without further cooking needed (i.e. ham that has been heated through to over 147°F)
    >> Partially cooked ham: Ham that requires additional cooking (i.e. ham that has been heated through to over 137°F)
    >> Uncooked ham: Ham that requires cooking to eat (i.e. ham that has not been heated prior to purchase)
    >> Boiled ham: Read-to-eat ham that has been boned, cured and cooked via boiling, without further cooking needed

  3. How to choose the right “cut” for your ham? (as called for in the recipe)
  4. >> Whole ham: Cut of ham that includes BOTH butt ham and shank ham from the pig’s leg (i.e. 10 to 20 lb cut of ham, bone-in or boneless)
    >> Butt ham: “Fattier” and “meatier” cut of ham (vs. shank ham) taken from top half of pig’s leg, and is easier to carve but costs more (i.e. 3 to 4 lb cut of ham, bone-in)
    >> Shank ham: Less “fatty” and less “meaty” cut of ham (vs. butt ham) taken from bottom half of pig’s leg, and is harder to carve but “sweeter” in taste (i.e. 3 to 4 lb cut of ham, bone-in)
    >> Spiral sliced ham: Precooked ham that has been pre-sliced in a spiral/continuous cut

  5. How much ham should you make?
  6. >> Basic ham math: When calculating the amount of ham you’ll need to serve your party, account for 1/2 lb of ham per person (with plenty remaining for leftovers!)

  7. How to “score” your ham, and decorate by adding cloves to your ham?
  8. >> Scoring your ham (allows glaze to penetrate the meat): Score your ham by making diagonal cuts to the fat layer along the rounded surface of the ham, followed by diagonal cuts in the opposite direction (i.e. forming diamond shapes)
    >> Adding whole cloves for decorative purposes: Insert a whole clove into the middle of each diamond for decoration

Photo collage of scoring and decorating a baked ham with whole cloves

It's customary to score a ham with diamond-shaped patterns to allow the glaze to penetrate the meat. One should also decorate the ham by sticking a whole clove into the middle of each diamond.

  9. How long should you bake your ham? (temperatures based on USDA’s food safety and inspection service standards; times based on baking in a 325°F oven)
  10. >> Fresh ham (uncooked): Fresh ham MUST reach an internal temperature of 160°F (for 12 to 16 lb whole leg bone-in fresh ham, bake for 22 to 26 minutes per lb; for 10 to 14 lb whole leg boneless fresh ham, bake for 24 to 28 minutes per lb; for 5 to 8 lb half leg bone-in fresh ham, bake for 35 to 40 minutes per lb)
    >> Partially cooked ham: If baking a “cook-before-eating” ham, the internal temperature SHOULD reach 140°F (for 10 to 14 lb whole leg bone-in partially cooked ham, bake for 18 to 20 minutes per lb; for 5 to 7 lb half leg bone-in partially cooked ham, bake for 22 to 25 minutes per lb; for 3 to 4 lb shank or butt cut bone-in partially cooked ham, bake for 35 to 40 minutes per lb)
    >> Cooked ham (reheating only): If reheating a cooked ham, the internal temperature SHOULD reach 140°F (for 10 to 14 lb whole leg bone-in cooked ham, bake for 15 to 18 minutes per lb; for 5 to 7 lb half leg bone-in cooked ham, bake for 18 to 24 minutes per lb; for 7 to 9 lb spiral cut whole or half leg cooked ham, bake for 10 to 18 minutes per lb)

  11. How to glaze your ham?
  12. Baked ham comic - no glaze allowed on the couch in the ham residence

Another hilarious comic strip pertaining to the topic of glazed hams (who knew so many existed!)

    >> Preparing the ham glaze: Whether you’re preparing a honey glaze, a maple glaze, a brown sugar glaze, or a pineapple glaze, you’ll need to mix all the ingredients from your ham glaze together in an oven-safe bowl (to be kept heated in the oven on the top rack as your ham bakes on the bottom rack)
    >> Basting the ham with your glaze: To keep your ham moist, not only do you need to brush the glaze over your ham before you stick it in the oven, but you’ll also need to re-brush the ham all over with the extra glaze from your oven-safe bowl every 10 to 15 minutes
    >> Never baste your ham with drippings from your roasting pan: Always baste with glaze from your oven-safe bowl, and NOT from the glaze that dripped from your ham to the bottom of the pan (since the dripped glaze will be excessively salty)!
    >> Caramelize your ham glaze: To caramelize your ham glaze, turn on the broiler during the last 4 to 5 minutes of baking our ham

Without further ado, here is the foolproof Honey Glazed Ham recipe that I would recommend all beginner ham bakers try!

“Baked Honey Glazed Ham” Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 (5 lb) ready-to-eat ham
  • 1/4 cup whole cloves
  • 1/4 cup dark corn syrup
  • 2 cups honey
  • 2/3 cup butter

Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 325°F (165°C)
  • Score ham diagonally to form diamond-shaped cuts
  • Stud middle of diamond-shaped cuts with whole cloves
  • Place ham in foil lined pan (more foil = less mess!)
  • Prepare glaze by mixing corn syrup, honey & butter
  • Brush glaze all over ham
  • Pour extra, remaining glaze in oven-safe bowl
  • Place glaze on top oven rack to keep warm while baking ham
  • Place ham in bottom oven rack and bake for 1 hr 15 min
  • Baste ham with glaze from oven-safe bowl every 10 to 15 min
  • Bake ham until internal temperature reaches 140°F
  • During last 5 min of cooking, turn on broiler to caramelize glaze
  • Remove from oven; let sit a few min before serving

Prep time: 20 min
Cook time: 1 hr
Makes: 15 servings
