Definition of a 21st century homemaker

50s domestic homemaker comic

I may be domestic... but at least I'm not a domestic wife from the 50s!

Obviously it’s no longer the 1950s. Just because I “thrive on cooking, cleaning and dusting,” that doesn’t mean I’m just an old-fashioned, traditional, stay-at-home housewife! Far from it.

Thank goodness we’re well into the 2010s. I’m free to proudly declare my love of all things domestic, and not be pigeonholed into the stereotypical 1950s version of a “homemaker.” In fact, I’d like to think of myself as “stylishly domestic“… the definition of a 21st century homemaker, if you will.

How so, you ask?

First of all, I’m a self-admitted shopaholic. I have a closet of clothes that’s literally the size of a regular bedroom. I have enough shoes and handbags to line most people’s regular walk-in closets. I believe in supporting handmade, and buying handmade… and as a result, I spend copious amounts of money purchasing one of a kind jewelry, handbags, and fashion accessories from local artisans. Heck, I’m even tech savvy! I swear by online shopping. Plus, I work in the e-commerce industry for an internet marketing company, and am trained in SEO. No 50s housewife can do that!

So, yes. I may have a penchant for cooking, baking, cleaning, organizing, and decorating. And I also enjoy knitting and dabbling in anything remotely “crafty” in nature. But as you can see, that’s where the similarities to a 50s homemaker ends!

Note: You may not believe this, but my ultimate role model? Martha Stewart. No, really! She may be quite a few generations older, but that woman sure knows how to juggle being a modern homemaker of the 21st century. Hats off to her… you rock, Martha.
