Custom designed knitting projects

Natalie Dee comic - Pile of unfinished knitting projects and half-balls of yarn

It's true! I'm so bad at completing knitting projects. But I guess that's what identifies myself as a true, bona fide pro knitter?

Introduction

Hello, Karina here! I’m the blogger for the Knitting & Purling blog, and a die hard knitter for well over a decade. You can read more about the knitter in me here.

During the many, many, many years of my life that I’ve devoted to knitting, I’ve basically taught myself how to knit. Every knitting pattern or stitch I’ve ever attempted… and every knitting project I’ve ever started (and likely left unfinished, as mentioned in the image above!)… I’ve figured everything out based solely on employing a trial and error methodology.

What are we going to knit this winter comic

Again, you should see the piles of custom designed knitting projects that I've started over the last couple years with full intentions of selling on this site... but never got around to finishing!

It’s this same self-taught, trial and error attack that would get my juices flowing when it comes to creating my own custom designed knitting projects… pieces that I have full intentions of selling on the official Knitting & Purling store (someday!).

As previously mentioned, I’m a very creative person. And I definitely have a head that’s constantly filled to the brim with numerous creative project ideas. My problem isn’t lack of creativity… it’s my inability to finish anything that I start!

If you’ve had the chance to take a peek at some of the custom designed knitting projects that I’ve got in the works so far on the official Knitting & Purling store page (that’s currently under construction) and you’re intrigued by what you see? Then I welcome you to follow my knitting design adventures by reading about them in this blog section.

More blog posts will be added regularly, so stay tuned!

Yarn Spotlight: Estelle Cloud Cotton (by Estelle Yarns)

Introduction

Time for another “yarn spotlight” blog post!

I’ve mentioned before how I’ve been obsessed with buying yarn that comes in a variety of bright, eye popping rainbow colors for my custom-designed knitting projects. And while M&K ECO Baby Ull Color is a great super fine weight yarn that satisfy that requirement, I wanted something that came in a thicker yarn weight as well.

Yarn Spotlight - Estelle Cloud Cotton yarn (color shade card)

Sample color shades of Estelle's "Cloud Cotton" yarn

The fact that it was also a 100% organic cotton yarn (i.e. a plant fiber yarn) enticed me even more into wanting to buy the yarn, since my previous yarn experiences dealt mostly with animal fiber yarns (e.g. wool yarn, angora yarn, etc.).

And the final factor that convinced me to buy Estelle’s Cloud Cotton yarn? Each hank was extremely affordable, priced at just $9/CAD per hank at my local yarn store… and each hank weighs a nice, hefty 100g!

Estelle’s “Cloud Cotton” Yarn Stats

Summary:

  • Brand: Estelle Yarns
  • Distributor: Estelle Designs and Sales Limited
  • Made in: Peru
  • Yarn length: 150m / 164yd
  • Yarn weight: 100g
  • Yarn fiber: Dyed 100% organic cotton
  • Standard yarn weight classification: #4 Medium (Aran)
  • Gauge size: 18 stitches x 24 rows = 4″ x 4″ (10cm x 10cm)
  • Needle size: US #8 (5mm)
  • Laundry care:
    • Hand wash
    • Cool iron
    • Dry flat
    • Do not bleach

So anyway, I went ahead and bought 2 hanks in every rainbow color, along with a few hanks in white and a few in black (check out the photos below for details):

  • Color shade #112Red
  • Color shade #108Orange
  • Color shade #106Lime green
  • Color shade #107Dark green
  • Color shade #109Light blue
  • Color shade #111Dark blue
  • Color shade #121Purple
  • Color shade #102 – White
  • Color shade #101Black

I went home with my Cloud Cotton yarn stash, and instantly decided to try the yarn out by using it in my latest custom-designed handbag knitting project. All I did was use Cloud Cotton in a straight-forward Stockinette stitch pattern, with no increases or decreases or anything fancy.

After knitting two square-shaped swatches in Stockinette stitch, I came to the conclusion that I did NOT like Estelle’s Cloud Cotton yarn. Yup, that’s right. I’m writing a yarn spotlight post on a yarn that I dislike.

The main reason why I’m not a fan of Estelle’s Cloud Cotton yarn? It pills. A lot.

I accidentally made a mistake while knitting with Cloud Cotton, and tried to backtrack by “frogging” my work.

Definition of “Frogging:” Unraveling your knitting project to a point before the mistake occurred

What ended up happening was the yarn started “pilling“…

Definition of “Pilling:” Little balls of fiber appearing on your knitting project

…to a point where the “frogged” part of the project didn’t look “newly knitted” anymore. That’s not exactly something you want to happen when knitting a project you’re intending to sell on Etsy!

While it was already too late to return the hanks of yarn that I had already used, I did go back to my local yarn shop to return the remaining unused hanks of Estelle’s Cloud Cotton yarn for store credit… that’s how unsatisfied I was with the yarn.

So even though Cloud Cotton by Estelle Yarns is affordable, made of 100% organic cotton, and comes in a wide array of rainbow cotton candy colors… I strongly recommend opting for a different yarn, simply based on personal experience and preference.

Yarn Spotlight: M&K ECO Ull Color (by Marks & Kattens)

Introduction

Welcome to the second “yarn spotlight” blog post on M&K yarn!

If you’ll recall, I’ve been doing a lot of yarn shopping recently (once again, please excuse me while I drool for a bit… mmmmm… yarn).

Just like with the last time, the main reason I’m investing in so much yarn is because I’m in the middle of mass-designing/knitting new custom designed knitting projects in order to get my soon-to-be-live Etsy shop underway (again, stay tuned for details!).

So like I had said in the beginning of this blog post, this is the second “yarn Spotlight” on yarns by the Marks & Kattens brand. The first spotlight showcased Mark & Kattens’ M&K ECO Baby Ull Color yarn, which I was especially drawn to due to the wide array of rainbow colors that the baby weight, 100% wool yarn came in… from reds to oranges to greens to blues to purples.

This second spotlight will be focusing on the heavier & thicker version of the M&K ECO Baby Ull Color. Introducing the M&K ECO Ull Color yarn!

M&K’s “ECO Ull Color” Yarn Stats

Summary:

  • Brand: Marks & Kattens
  • Distributor: Nordic Yarn (in Canada) & Swedish Yarn (in USA)
  • Made in: Germany
  • Yarn length: 80m / 87yd
  • Yarn weight: 50g
  • Yarn fiber: 100% wool (“ull”), with minimum 20% merino wool content (“merinoull”)
  • Standard yarn weight classification: #4 Medium
  • Gauge size: 16.5 stitches x 23 rows = 4″ x 4″ (10cm x 10cm)
  • Needle size: US #9 (5.5mm)
  • Laundry care:
    • Hand wash
    • Dry flat
    • Do not iron/press
    • Do not bleach
    • Dry-clean, normal cycle (any solvent except trichloroethylene)
    • Do not tumble dry

Same with the M&K ECO Baby Ull Color yarn, this medium weight version is also made out of 100% pure wool (with a guaranteed minimum 20% consisting of merino wool). It’s also similarly affordable (currently listed at $7 CAD/ball in my local Canadian yarn store). And like the baby weight version, it comes in a wide array of colors. But instead of the eye-popping rainbow shades of the M&K ECO Baby Ull Color, this non-baby weight version comes in more subtle, less vibrant shades. Also like its super fine yarn weight cousin, there are 7 different natural raw shades of the regular, non-color M&K ECO Ull yarn.

Yarn Spotlight - M and K ECO Ull yarn (color shade card)

Sample color shades of M&K's "ECO Ull Color" & "ECO Ull" yarns

As I had just mentioned, the M&K ECO Ull Color yarn comes in wide range of colors that rival the baby weight version… but the shades are definitely much more muted. I had purchased the following color shades (check out the photos below for details):

  • Color shade #300Red
  • Color shade #301Orange
  • Color shade #302Green
  • Color shade #304Teal
  • Color shade #309Blue
  • Color shade #308Purple

I also purchased the following natural shades of the non-color M&K ECO Ull yarn:

  • Color shade #1977Gray
  • Color shade #1979Cream
  • Color shade #1981Brown

So if you’re looking for an affordable, 100% wool medium weight yarn that comes in a wide array of rainbow colors in muted shades… then I strongly recommend M&K ECO Ull Color by Marks & Kattens.

Shh.. top secret! A brief glimpse of the custom-designed knitting projects that I’m currently working on (soon to be sold on Etsy)

So I had basically all but given up working on the Vogue Knitting 2011 Stitch-a-Day Calendar quilt knitting project in favor of these new custom-designed knitting projects that I’m currently working on.

I’m still far away from reaching my goal (where I’ll have amassed an entire collection of hand knitted hats, gloves, scarves, handbags, home decor products and more), but I’m eventually going to be selling these Search Engine Optimization (SEO) / HTML themed custom knitted geek wear items online.

Just a brief background update… I recently made the decision to open shop (in the soon-to-be present, near future!), in order to sell my custom-designed, handmade knitwear items… products that are thematically connected based on the two loves in my life:

  1. Being an SEO, by day (via my career choice)
  2. Being a hardcore knitter, by night (via my favorite leisure activity)

So if you see similar products to the following hand knitted items on sale elsewhere, remember that I had started working on them here, first… and this blog post just proved it!

Want to prove you’re a “White Hat” SEO? Nothing gets the message across more clearly than sporting a ski toque that’s LITERALLY a white hat!

Note: Pay no attention to those dotted horizontal lines… they’re not part of the final product (I just used them to help me line up the letters).

Introduction

Welcome to another “yarn spotlight” blog post!

I’ve been doing quite a lot of yarn shopping recently (please excuse me while I drool for a bit… OK, I’m good now!). Why? Well, the main reason is because I’m in the middle of mass-creating / knitting a whole bunch of new custom designed knitting projects in order to get my soon-to-be-live Etsy shop underway (stay tuned for details!).

So of course, I decided to use that as an excuse to explore purchasing new yarns, from brands that I’ve never experimented knitting with before. I was especially drawn to yarns that came in a rainbow of colors, from reds to oranges to greens to blues to purples.

As a result, I’ve recently discovered (and fallen madly in love with!) M&K ECO Baby Ull Color yarn by Marks & Kattens. Actually, I’ve also discovered the non-baby, thicker version… but I’ll reserve that for another day’s yarn spotlight post.

M&K’s “ECO Baby Ull Color” Yarn Stats

Summary:

  • Brand: Marks & Kattens
  • Distributor: Nordic Yarn (in Canada) & Swedish Yarn (in USA)
  • Made in: Peru
  • Yarn length: 83m / 90yd
  • Yarn weight: 25g
  • Yarn fiber: 100% wool (“ull”), with minimum 20% merino wool content (“merinoull”)
  • Standard yarn weight classification: #1 Super fine (baby)
  • Gauge size: 26 stitches x 37 rows = 4″ x 4″ (10cm x 10cm)
  • Needle size: US #2 (3mm)
  • Laundry care:
    • Hand wash
    • Dry flat
    • Do not iron/press
    • Do not bleach

Made out of 100% pure wool (with a guaranteed minimum 20% consisting of merino wool), this yarn is the finest spun in M&K’s ECO wool range. It’s also extremely affordable (currently listed at $5 CAD/ball in my local Canadian yarn store), yet it comes in a wide range of bright, rainbow colors (compared to the regular M&K ECO Baby Ull yarn line, consisting of 7 different natural raw shades).

Like I had said before, I basically fell in love with M&K ECO Baby Ull Color yarn simply due to the wide range of rainbow colors that it comes in. As a result, I’ve purchased the following color shades (check out the photos below for details):

  • Color shade #187Red
  • Color shade #177Orange
  • Color shade #183Green
  • Color shade #184Teal
  • Color shade #188Blue

Here I go again, blog hiatus #2 within the same number of months!

Billie Joe Armstrong performing in the American Idiot Broadway show

While on my last blog hiatus, I visited NYC and caught a showing of the American Idiot Broadway musical... starring Billie Joe Armstrong himself, on stage!

Hello again, to anyone perusing through my blog. Welcome!

First off, let me apologize once again for my irregular blogging schedule.

I got a bit overwhelmed in January when I decided to start my Vogue Knitting Stitch-a-Day 2011 Calendar quilt project. I bought the calendar at the end of December, and made an insane decision to knit an 8″ x 8″ square swatch of each day’s knitting pattern on the actual day that pattern would appear in the calendar.

Needless to say, that was absolutely impossible to keep up… especially since I still have to work full-time during the day, not to mention the fact that I’m also undertaking 18 bazillion other hobbies of mine at the same time.

New York City NY hand drawn map by Alice Tait As you can clearly see, I tried my best to keep up with the schedule until January 14th, and then hell just sorta broke loose and everything started unwinding like a ball of yarn!

What have I been working on since then? Well, I’ve actually had tons of exciting things happen that I would love to retroactively blog about. I mean, there are still topics that I have yet to blog about since my last hiatus back in December! Guess I better get cracking.

Some of the exciting things that happened recently:

  1. I traveled to New York City(!!!)
  2. >> Attended the Vogue Knitting LIVE! convention and marketplace
    >> Bought lots and lots and lots of yarn
    >> Visited TV Show Project Runway‘s regular stomping ground… a.k.a. the fabulous Mood designer fabrics store!
    >> Saw Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong personally perform in the American Idiot Broadway musical as St. Jimmy)

  3. Getting the groundwork prepared for creating a new Etsy store
  4. >> More details to come

  5. Starting a TON of new knitting projects
  6. >> Includes my first time trying my hand at custom designing my own line of knitwear!
