Introduction

As a Search Engine Optimization manager with close to 7 years of experience in the field, I’ve definitely got my own thoughts and opinions on SEO.

Now, I’m not planning on divulging any information that I’ve learned throughout the years that’s directly related to my place of employment. However, I can say that throughout my career as an optimizer (so far!) I’ve been granted unbelievable opportunities to work with top authoritative figureheads in the SEO industry (including people with direct connections to Google!).

Search engine SERPs comic image

Cute comic on how to rank well in SERPs (a.k.a. search engine result pages)

I’ve also had the opportunity to attend the annual Search Engine Strategies (SES) convention and expo in Toronto four years in a row. That, plus I regularly keep up with industry updates via top SEO resource websites, including SEOmoz, Search Engine Land, Search Engine Roundtable, WebmasterWorld, Search Engine Journal, and more.

Through all of this, I’ve amassed enough knowledge to develop my own opinions on search engine optimization topics.

Interested on what I have to offer on the matter? Then I invite you to follow my blog musings on everything SEO! Read about my 2 cents on…

  1. Internet marketing through search vs. social media
  2. Google Panda and other algorithm updates vs. Google Web Spam manual penalties (including filing reinclusion requests)
  3. Linkbuilding best practices (paid links, anchor text, link juice, nofollowing… oh my!)
  4. Tracking link metrics (PageRank, mozRank, mozTrust, Page Authority, Domain Authority, # internal vs. external links, # unique linking root domains)
  5. Keyword rankings, on-page optimization best practices and white hat SEO (KW density, H1 & other headers, title tags, meta descriptions)
  6. Keyword research via Google’s AdWords Keyword Tool
  7. Duplicate content and web crawl errors, investigated via Google Webmaster Tools and Bing Webmaster Tools
  8. Submitting pages to search via XML sitemaps

Blog Musings on Search Engine Optimization

The ultimate Google Panda algorithm update collage image (custom Google Panda logos, illustrations & drawings… oh my!)

Panda comic - All pandas do is eat and sleep

It's true! If you've ever seen a one in person at a zoo, you'll know that all pandas do is eat and sleep. And all they eat is bamboo. No wonder they're endangered!

So a couple days ago, I ranted about my inability to escape any and all references to pandas… particularly the Google algorithm kind.

Initially, I was so desperate to get away I even tried to get my hands on some sort of panda deterrent (if such a thing even existed!). Well, I’ve since had a change of heart. I’ve decided to embrace my panda curse.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Which is why I can’t think of a better way to celebrate my newfound love for everyone’s favorite black & white bear (and by “everyone,” I mean anyone who isn’t currently employed in the SEO industry, and anyone whose livelihood doesn’t depend on Google’s search engine!) than expressing it in picture form.

Google Panda content farmer comic

Initially, the Google Panda algorithm update targeted thin-content sites, a.k.a. "content farms"

So here is my personal tribute to Google’s Panda algorithm update (February 24, 2011 – Present).

I’ve put together a massive collage image of every custom Google Panda logo, illustration and drawing ever created.

And I wasn’t kidding when I said “massive.” There are a total of 32 Google Panda images included in this collage! Technically, I could’ve continued compiling and adding since there are so many custom-created Google Panda images out there… (you have no idea). But there came a point when I got to 32 and said, that’s enough.

Anyway, enjoy! XOXO, Karina

Just a brief note: I’ve done my best to credit all 32 original bloggers or webmasters who created the original illustrations used in my Google Panda algorithm update collage image (see below). So on the other end of the spectrum, I would truly appreciate it if you give credit to this site (the Knitting & Purling blog at http://www.knittingandpurling.com) if you were to feature my collage image on your blog or website. And if you do, I would love for you to let me know by emailing me (Karina) at info@knittingandpurling.com or contacting me via Twitter @GeeksLoveToKnit. I’ll become your best friend forever if you give my lil’ ol’ site some credit and link love. Cheers and many thanks in advance!

It’s official; I cannot escape any and all references to pandas (They keep haunting & following me! Anyone have panda deterrent?)

Mindskin comic - How God made panda bears

Humorous comic on how God made panda bears

OK, I have absolutely no idea why pandas have made such a prominent presence in my life over the past year or so… but they have.

I’ve always been in love with giant pandas. Part of it I’m sure can be attributed to the Asian in me.

But you have to admit, there’s just something about pandas and how utterly cute they look that make everyone go “Awwww!” Especially when they’re babies! Have you seen the YouTube videos? Holy cow, talk about adorable.

Anyway, back in November 2010 I had blogged about how Canada was in the process of inking a deal to bring pandas from China for display at several zoos nationwide. Nothing was ever confirmed since then, so that news story sort of died for a year.

However, while talks of pandas coming to Canada may have died since end of 2010… that didn’t mean I was able to escape any and all references to this black and white faux bear! In fact, quite the opposite occurred. I was utterly surrounded by talks of pandas every minute of every day for all of 2011 with the exception of 1 month and 24 days!

Why? Because as anyone who’s in the SEO or Internet industry may know, 2011 became the year of the big bad Google Panda algorithm update, which first made its roar back in February 24, 2011 (dun dun dunnnnn!).

Qing Qing and Quan Quan giant pandas visited Toronto Zoo in 1985

Back in 1985, visiting giant pandas Qing Qing and Quan Quan drew quite the crowd to the Toronto Zoo!

Well today, talk of actual real pandas (the animal kind!) came back into the news in Toronto because it was officially confirmed today that pandas will for sure be arriving to the Toronto Zoo.

As a current seasonal member (and one for multiple consecutive years in the past) of The Toronto Zoo, I’m beyond thrilled… as I’m sure my husband is, as well. It should be noted that one of his most treasured childhood bears (which now belongs to me, of course) still wears a Toronto Zoo Qing Qing panda shirt (back when both Qing Qing and Quan Quan giant pandas were visiting Toronto in 1985).

Anyway, to conclude… it’s official. I might as well admit there’s no possible way for me to escape. I will forever be followed in life by these pesky (yet admittedly adorable) bamboo-chewing black and white cuddly beasts!!!

(Anyone have anything that can successfully act as a panda deterrent?)

Google’s Panda algorithm update officially arrives in Canada. I blame Stephen Harper.

Google Panda Algorithm Update Logo

Google rolled out a massive algorithm update in 2011, commonly referred to as the "Panda"

Whether you’re a part of the SEO world or you’re a webmaster of a significant-sized American website… you’ve likely been keeping up with Google’s recent yo-yoing algorithm antics.

Unofficially referred to as The Panda Update, Google’s algorithm update that targeted “thin content farming sites” initially rolled out on February 24, 2011, and affected US sites only.

“Many of the changes we make are so subtle that very few people notice them. But in the last day or so we launched a pretty big algorithmic improvement to our ranking—a change that noticeably impacts 11.8% of our queries—and we wanted to let people know what’s going on. This update is designed to reduce rankings for low-quality sites—sites which are low-value add for users, copy content from other websites or sites that are just not very useful. At the same time, it will provide better rankings for high-quality sites—sites with original content and information such as research, in-depth reports, thoughtful analysis and so on.” -Official Google Blog

Google Panda Algorithm Update Comic

Depending on whether or not you've been directly affected by Google's "Panda" update, this comic may be either extremely funny... or extremely ironic.

Here in Canada, we knew the time would come when Google’s mighty “Panda” would inevitably cross the border and bitch-slap us up north.

Well, the day has finally arrived… Google’s Panda algorithm update has officially landed in Canada.

“Over a month ago we introduced an algorithmic improvement designed to help people find more high-quality sites in search. Since then we’ve gotten a lot of positive responses about the change: searchers are finding better results, and many great publishers are getting more traffic.

Today we’ve rolled out this improvement globally to all English-language Google users.” -Official Google Blog

And you know what I think about all of this? Four words: I blame Stephen Harper.*

I Blame Stephen Harper for Google Panda Algorithm Update Arriving in Canada

Google's "Panda" algorithm update arrives in Canada... and guess what? I blame Stephen Harper.*

If you’ll recall, I had reported back in November 2010 that Canada was in talks with China to bring over 2 giant pandas.

In this Macleans article from the same time period, it’s pretty much confirmed that Harper was the sole person responsible for persuading China to “rent out a pair of giant pandas for extended stays at zoos in Ontario, Alberta and Quebec.” How did he do it, you ask? Well, as Macleans journalist Scott Feschuk puts it… simply by “kissing ass.”

So there you have it. I know Google’s “Panda” refers to the nickname of a Google engineer… as opposed to the fuzzy-wuzzy black and white pseudo-bears that Harper wants to bring into Canada on rent from China. Nevertheless, I’m going to state it here first and officially make the connection between the two!

So there you have it. According to my twisted logic, Stephen Harper is responsible for bringing Google’s Panda algorithm update to Canada. Blast him!!!

*Note: OK, obviously this blog post was written as a joke, and isn’t meant to be taken seriously. Please don’t read into it literally! Much thanks.

Oops… site glitch! No idea what’s up but my blog’s sidebar & footer seem to have disappeared…

Off The Mark comic - computer site glitch

Oops! My blog had a mishap.

Update:

(Scroll down to below horizontal line for original blog post from earlier today)

Turns out I accidentally forgot to close an HTML tag in one of my previous blog posts. Oopsy-daisy! Thank goodness there are sites that exist out there to check web document errors.

Have I mentioned I ♥ sites devoted to tracking SEO stuff? I mean, just today at work while auditing our site I discovered WhereGoes, a site devoted to tracing complete 301 redirect paths for any URL that you punch into their site! I swear, I felt like a kid on Christmas day. I know, I’m quite sad.

Anyhoo… all is fixed so everything is good again. That’s all, folks!

Original Message:

Hi everyone,

So sorry for you to have to see my blog under these circumstances, but somehow the right sidebar and footer seem to have disappeared today from my blog. Anyway, I’ve contacted the “Happiness Engineers” of WordPress, and hopefully they’ll be able to identify the glitch right away.

My apologies once again, and please come back at a later time.

Cheers,
Karina

Shh.. top secret! A brief glimpse of the custom-designed knitting projects that I’m currently working on (soon to be sold on Etsy)

So I had basically all but given up working on the Vogue Knitting 2011 Stitch-a-Day Calendar quilt knitting project in favor of these new custom-designed knitting projects that I’m currently working on.

I’m still far away from reaching my goal (where I’ll have amassed an entire collection of hand knitted hats, gloves, scarves, handbags, home decor products and more), but I’m eventually going to be selling these Search Engine Optimization (SEO) / HTML themed custom knitted geek wear items online.

Just a brief background update… I recently made the decision to open shop (in the soon-to-be present, near future!), in order to sell my custom-designed, handmade knitwear items… products that are thematically connected based on the two loves in my life:

  1. Being an SEO, by day (via my career choice)
  2. Being a hardcore knitter, by night (via my favorite leisure activity)

So if you see similar products to the following hand knitted items on sale elsewhere, remember that I had started working on them here, first… and this blog post just proved it!

Want to prove you’re a “White Hat” SEO? Nothing gets the message across more clearly than sporting a ski toque that’s LITERALLY a white hat!

Tongue-in-cheek chullo hat, with <head> and </head> HTML tagged ear flaps sandwiching your actual head in the middle!

Note: Pay no attention to those dotted horizontal lines… they’re not part of the final product (I just used them to help me line up the letters).

I also do custom orders!
