Being stylishly domestic

Natalie Dee comics - being fashionable can be awkward

Don't worry, I promise my fashion taste won't result in awkward silences all around

Introduction

In the About section, I’ve already classified myself as a 21st century homemaker… which I had defined as a “modern domestic housewife” who may possess all of the same chores, hobbies, and interests as a housewife from the 1950s, but she is also fashionably stylish and extremely tech savvy.

In general, this Knitting & Purling blog was created with the intentions of covering topics that are primarily “domestic” or “crafty” in nature… from cooking and baking to home decorating. However, based on my definition of the modern homemaker? It only makes sense to have an entire section devoted to style, fashion, and beauty. I mean, let’s face it. Being stylish? That’s 100% integral to being domestic these days!

All style blog posts are unified by a indigo blue color. They can be broken down into the following categories…

Black Dr Martens women’s Phina tall leather buckle boot review: They bring out the 90s grunge rock girl from deep within me! (Part 2 in my hunt for footwear perfection)

Introduction

So I’ve already alluded to my obsession with shoes in a previous blog post on my discovery of the genius behind Kenneth Cole New York Exclusive 925 Technology shoes.

I initially discovered (and purchased!) them last year while doing a little pre-Boxing Day shoe shopping… and have been wearing them to work and just out and about ever since because they’re THAT comfortable. So chalk Kenneth Cole New York Exclusive 925 Technology footwear as my first find so far in my recent search for the treasure map to footwear perfection.

Now as for find #2? That would be my newly purchased (well, at this point it’s been 4 months… so not really THAT new) black Dr Martens women’s Phina tall leather buckle boots!

Today's featured top fashion find: Black Dr Martens women's Phina tall leather buckle boots!

Black Dr Martens Women’s Phina Tall Leather Buckle Boot Review

For years, I’ve been on a hunt for the perfect pair of black leather knee-high boots… so I would have the option to wear skirts and dresses in the cold fall or winter months. I wasn’t looking for a pair or brown leather boots, nor was I looking for something too overly dressy with a high heel (since I already have both of those, married together in the form of brown knee-high pointed-toe stiletto leather boots). I wanted something super casual, super comfortable, yet still uber stylish and possess that unique flair that I tend to gravitate towards when I shop for footwear.

Like I said, I’ve been seeking these perfect black boots literally for YEARS. But I’ve never been able to find anything I like because most of the ones I had looked at in the past were either sort of cheap looking (that’s one of my biggest style pet peeves… cheap-looking fashion items), or had ugly clunky heels that make them look sort of cloggish… if you know what I mean.

But lo and behold! Last year at Boxing Week when I found myself looking in shoe stores, trying to use the mall gift card that my boss had given me for Christmas? I struck footwear perfection gold.

Introducing the boots of my dreamswomen’s Dr Martens Phina tall buckle boots in black!

Hunt for the treasure map to footwear perfection - Dr Martens womens Phina black tall buckle boots

These are literally the black leather knee-high boots of my dreams!

Something about these boots just completely awoke the inner 90s grunge rock girl from deep within me. That’s right, back in the 90s during my angst-filled teenage years? I was all about alternative/grunge/heavy rock music. My favorite band of all time has always been (and always will be… to this day!) The Smashing Pumpkins. Heck, I slept on the streets overnight outside Toronto’s MuchMusic building just to see them perform at the MuchMusic Video Awards show one year! I even traveled far and wide (well, by which I mean Chicago & Columbus) to see my idol of all idols perform (I still ♥ you, Billy Corgan!). And not to mention my love for Nine Inch Nails, Tool, A Perfect Circle, Depeche Mode, The Pixiex, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Audioslave, Rage Against the Machine, and more.

Anyway, the second I laid eyes on them at my neighbourhood SoftMoc, I knew I had to buy them (even though they were a BIT pricier than what I normally would like to spend on average on a pair of shoes or boots). It worked out perfectly because they were also on sale because of Boxing Week sales… and by using my mall gift card, the price really was quite negligible! (At least, that’s how i justified it in my head! Should be noted that’s how I justify ALL footwear purchases that I make…)

Here are some stats and highlights…

  • Dr Martens signature “Air Wair” pull tab at back to help with getting in/out of the boots
  • Durable DML rubber outsole cusions & supports
  • Approximate shaft height = 15″ tall
  • Approximate circumference (i.e. around upper thigh) = 16″ long
  • Issued under UK sizing

Let me just say this: After purchasing my coveted black Phina Doc Martens boots? I ended up wearing them as my “winter boots” every day throughout all of winter 2012… and my feet never complained once!

They felt like they were cushioned in memory foam pillows or something thanks to the super soft footbeds that mould around your heels and arches. I didn’t even really treat the leather exterior, although I probably should have if I wanted them to last. They started gradually showing the expected wear and tear most leather would exhibit after several months of extended use… but that just gave it an extra vintage look that actually made the boots looked even better than when brand new! Practically felt like I had them since the early 1990s from the era of grunge rock. I almost felt like I should be pairing my Phina Doc Martens with a babydoll dress and pretend to be Brenda or Kelly from the high school era of the original 90210! Almost.

Oh, also! The whole time I was decked out in my Doctor Martens, I realized something. Never in my life had I received so many compliments on one specific fashion item before, as I did with my Phina black buckle boots! It seemed like everywhere I went, people I knew and strangers alike kept constantly coming up to me just to tell me they LOVED my boots. Definitely made me love them more!

So yeah, anyone out there who’s looking for a really excellent pair of women’s leather knee-high black boots? I definitely recommend these black Dr Martens women’s Phina tall leather boots! Because you just can’t go wrong with Doctor Martens boots when it comes to quality footwear.

One last note: I normally wear a size 7 when it comes to women’s shoes… but these boots fit me in a size 6 (this might be because they’re listed in UK sizing?). Anyway, just keep in mind the sizes may run a bit larger than average if you’re seriously planning on buying these boots (which you should!).

My rating score? I give these boots a rating of 5 out of 5!

Kenneth Cole New York Exclusive 925 Technology = A shoeaholic’s dream! (Part 1 in my search for the treasure map to footwear perfection)

Natalie Dee comic - Zappos shoe shopping

Hey, Zappos does claim to offer the biggest and best selection of shoes available!

I’m not going to beat around the bush about this. Yup. I have no shame in admitting this, and I’m going to come right out and say it: I love shopping for shoes.

In fact, I can pretty much come right out and admit to being a shoeaholic, through and through.

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m such a huge shopaholic when it comes to fashion and apparel that I decided to transform our smallest bedroom into a gigantic walk-in-closet. I’m talking rows and rows of shelving across one wall of the room devoted entirely to storing my footwear!

Style post bulletin board - Kenneth Cole New York Exclusive 925 Technology shoes

Today's featured top fashion find: Kenneth Cole New York Exclusive 925 Technology shoes!

So as someone who has purchased her fair share of shoes and boots in the past, I would like to think of myself as a connoisseur of sorts on what footwear is hot and what shoe brand is to die for.

Since I already own so many pairs of shoes, I tend to restrict my shoe shopping tendencies until around the holidays… or at least when there are huge sales available (that’s my way of justifying it!).

Kenneth Cole shoe shopping banner ad image

Mmm... I now appreciate Kenneth Cole footwear, especially if it's on sale!

Which is why a month ago, I couldn’t resist hopping into my neighborhood Town Shoes right before Christmas break, when they still had a pretty good selection of shoes available (because by Boxing Day the whole store would be wiped clean in a matter of hours, I know… I’ve witnessed it first hand in years past!) and they were available at discount prices.

I’ve never had the chance to try on Kenneth Cole New York shoes before, and man. Have I been ever missing out, big time! I tried on a pair of Kenneth Cole New York pumps featuring Exclusive 925 Technology and I nearly had a shoegasm, the shoes were THAT comfy.

Kenneth Cole New York Exclusive 925 Technology women's shoes quote

All Kenneth Cole New York women's shoes now feature Exclusive 925 Technology!

When it comes to dress shoes, I’m a complete sucker for high heels and pumps. Nothing beats the silhouette of a classic pump shoe with a 2″ or 3″ stiletto heel. I can do round toe or pointed toe pumps, and I’m good with matte leather, patent leather or suede. I’m also huge into color, so give me a dress pump in every bright color of the rainbow and I’ll be a happy camper.

So as you can see, I’m not selective in the least when it comes to buying heels. The only problem? They have to be comfortable to wear. Now there’s the rub… because 9 times out of 10, shoes that look nice aren’t necessarily the pain-free variety!

And that’s why I knew immediately after trying my first pair of Kenneth Cole New York Exclusive 925 Technology women’s heels that I had struck footwear goldmine.

What is Kenneth Cole New York Exclusive 925 Technology?

Attended my second Foxy Originals Friends & Family Holiday Sale at the Bata Shoe Museum!

>Invitation to the Foxy Originals friends and family holiday sale 2011

It's time for the annual Foxy Originals friends & family holiday sale at the Bata Shoe Museum!

Guess what? It’s that time again!

That’s right, December is in full swing, which means only one thing… it’s time for Foxy Originals to host their annual friends and family holiday sale at the Bata Shoe Museum!

Many of you may remember how big a fan I am of handmade, one of a kind Foxy Originals jewelry. Not only did I win one of their Facebook contests (and along with it came an awesome bounty of $200 in free Foxy jewelry!), I also practically cleaned out their clearance jewelry during last year’s friends and family sale.

You would think with a Foxy collection as big as mine, I wouldn’t need to buy any more stuff from them. But that’s where you’re wrong. At prices like $5 for a pair of earrings (regularly priced at around $24 for the dangly filigree ones that I like), $5 for a ring (also regularly priced at $24), and $10 for any of their necklaces (including their famous reversible necklaces, regularly priced at around $30 to $34)… how can you say no?

A girl's love affair with Foxy Originals sale and clearance priced jewelry

This girl? Why, she's in love with Foxy Originals jewelry... especially if the items are at sale or clearance prices!

Now, I know I’ve already proclaimed my undying love for Foxy’s silver earrings before… but it wasn’t until recently that I’ve started getting into their gold jewelry. Maybe it’s ’cause I already own the silver version of pretty much everything listed here in Foxy’s filigree earrings collection. So in my head, buying the same jewelry items in gold that I already owned in silver? Completely justifiable!

Gold filigree earrings purchased at Foxy Originals 2011 friends and family holiday sale

Some of the gold filigree earrings I had purchased at the Foxy Originals 2011 friends and family holiday sale

While on the topic of gold Foxy jewelry… I’ve been in love with these gorgeous Swirl rings from the new Daydream collection for a while now (drooling from afar, anyway). However, I was never really much of a ring person (in fact, this might come as a surprise but I never really owned any Foxy rings!)… and $24 for a single ring seemed a bit steep to me (considering I could get a pair of earrings for the same price). But when I found it in the clearance bin for only $5? In both silver AND gold? Oh, happy day for Karina!

Swirl rings from the Daydream collection purchased at Foxy Originals 2011 friends and family holiday sale

Pretty Swirl rings from the Daydream collection purchased for only $5 each!

I must have felt more spontaneous than usual during the sale, because I suddenly felt the urge to splurge on Foxy’s signature reversible necklaces. When it comes to their necklaces, I usually only purchase their monochrome all-silver or all-gold variety. I mean, of course I own a couple of their multicolor flippable necklaces… but during the sale this year I went full-blown, all-out crazy and bought out practically everything they had in their clearance bins. Well, just the cute ones anyway. And only enough to cover all colors of the rainbow, and nothing more, I swear! Check them out below…

And lastly, you know I couldn’t escape the holiday sale without browsing items from the new collections. I fell in love with what I believe is one of Foxy’s best silver filigree earrings to date. Check out these Hazel earrings, also from the Daydream collection. They’re super pretty, AND they were only $20 at the holiday sale… with no tax!

Super pretty silver Hazel earrings from the new Daydream collection, purchased for only $20 at the holiday sale

Another thing I swooned over? This chunky silver filigree Jade bracelet. Like their rings, I’ve never really paid much attention to Foxy’s bracelet collection. But I’ve always been a huge fan of their tree-themed jewelry, so there was no I way I could turn down a swoon-worthy bracelet consisting of “four panels of foliage.” It’s like having a bracelet made to order to match my existing Foxy silver filigree leaf earrings!

Swoon-worthy bracelet practically made to order to match my favorite silver filigree foliage earrings!

One more item I couldn’t resist? A necklace that’s completely new to the Foxy shop… something I’ve never seen before. I was intrigued.

What is it you ask? If you go to Foxy Originals website right now, you’ll see it featured in a large banner ad image across their home page:

Official Foxy Originals banner ad image of their new Serenity necklace from the Daydream collection

Official promo image of the new Serenity necklace currently displayed on the Foxy Originals home page

I guess you can consider it a multicolor reversible necklace like the other items from this signature collection of Foxy’s. But somehow for me, this Serenity necklace is completely different.

For one thing, the colors are jaw-droppingly (Is that a word? It is now!) beautiful. Coral pink on one side and my favorite lime green on the other? So yummy. And something about the shape and the material that it’s made of makes this necklace look classier than the other reversible necklaces.

Anyway, seeing how it was also available for less at the holiday sale, I had to pick it up (despite having already cleaned out of their clearance bins Foxy’s regular type of reversible necklaces!).

Now I just have to wait 12 more months for next year’s sale. See you there next time!

Wool coats, trench coats, peacoats… oh my! (A story about a girl’s love affair with outerwear)

Style post bulletin board - A girl's love affair with outerwear

Today's featured top fashion finds: My Aspen green J. Crew wool coat and United Colors of Benetton yellow trench coat!

So, I’ve already written blog post once about the story of a fabric pattern, part of the “A Girl’s Love Affair With…” blog series at Knitting & Purling.

With that in mind, the following is a story about a girl’s love affair with outerwear.

(In case you haven’t figured out… that girl is me!)

Karinas Roots purple winter trench coat

Mmmmm... I sure love my Roots purple winter trench coat!

I’ve actually already alluded to my love affair with outerwear once, when I blogged about my new fave coat from Roots (in my newfound fave color of purple!).

And don’t get me wrong, I still love that coat. It’s just that, well, I love all coats. Meaning I definitely have more than one fave…

Over the years, I’ve definitely accumulated quite the collection (definitely more than one girl needs in a lifetime!). But you can’t accuse me of being the only girl in the world who’s addicted to fashion… especially when it’s fashionable outerwear!

From trench coats to wool coats, from peacoats to winter coats… I don’t discriminate, I love them all. I even like me some leather jackets, down vests, and fitted blazers… but those will have to be covered in another post on another day.

A girl's love affair with jackets coats and outerwear (oh my)

This girl? Why, she's in love with jackets, coats and outerwear (...oh my!)

My Aspen green colored J. Crew wool coat matches Kate Spade's signature Kelly green color!

My Aspen green colored J. Crew wool coat matches Kate Spade's signature Kelly green!

Today, it’s all about coats!

So what are some of my top picks? At the top of the list is undoubtedly my long fitted Kelly green wool coat that I had purchased online from J. Crew.

I had initially seen it in person while vacationing in California in December 2007, and fell head over heels in love with it. However, I didn’t end up getting it while in Cali, and lived to regret it when I got back home (Since, I’m not sure if you’re aware, but there are currently no J. Crew stores in Canada! Boooo).

But never fear, the Internet saved the day!

Chicago Illinois hand drawn map (featured image)Why do I love it so much? Well, because that coat’s shade of Kelly green is my absolute favorite shade of green, EVER (and of course, green is my favorite color to begin with!).

It’s identical to the signature green used in Kate Spade’s logo… and I loooooooooove Kate Spade. In fact, you can see me wearing that exact Kelly green J. Crew wool coat while posing in front of a Kate Spade store when I traveled to Chicago in 2008.

Note: I know, it seems a bit lame to pose in front of a store… but like I had said, I worship Kate Spade. And like J. Crew, there are no Kate Spade stores in Canada, dammit!

My beloved yellow trench coat from the United Colors of Benetton

My beloved yellow trench coat, purchased in Spain at the United Colors of Benetton

Another coat near the top of my list? That would be my spontaneously-purchased sunny yellow trench coat from the United Colors of Benetton, which I had purchased on a whim while vacationing in Barcelona in May 2009 with my girlfriends.

I know, the yellow is insanely bright… and I don’t deny that wearing it makes me look kind of like The Man with the Yellow Hat. But you’ll just have to trust me, that having it worn on a person makes the coat look WAY hotter than you would think just by looking at a picture of it.

Next on the list is a coat that was the result of another spontaneous purchase (Are you noticing a trend here? I have no self control when it comes to outerwear, I’m telling ya!)… a hot black and white raincoat number from BEDO.

Now, I’ve never purchased anything from BEDO in my life. But I happened to be at a mall with a couple of friends one day, and BAM! We walked by the coat and I couldn’t resist. Take a look for yourself, I found a picture of me wearing it at my bachelorette party last year.

Karina at her bachelorette party in a black and white BEDO raincoat

Me at my bachelorette party (pictured with my maid of honor!), sporting my black & white BEDO raincoat

Anyway, why am I going off on a tangent all of a sudden about coats? Because while at a Zara the other day (a clothing store that I grew to love a lot after coming home from my trip to Spain… they have Zaras everywhere over there, and they’re all like Zara superstores!), I stumbled upon The. Mother. Of. All. Wool. Coats.

It was part of Zara’s TRF line of trendier clothing for younger women. It was also the only coat left in the entire store! When I saw it and discovered it was the last coat left, I nearly cried out in joy for being just that lucky.

What made that wool coat so awesome? First of all, it features the best pattern, ever. Think half houndstooth, half plaid. It’s longish, fitted, and has a cute belt. I knew I had to buy it.

Problem is, I had no idea how much it cost… there was no tag on it. But by that point, I didn’t care. It could be $200 and I’d still get it.

Half houndstooth-half plaid wool coat from Zara

My new half houndstooth- & half plaid-patterned wool coat from Zara

Well lucky for me, it didn’t cost me $200. It didn’t even cost me $100. Or even FIFTY DOLLARS. What did it cost? The sales clerk at the cash register scanned the barcode on the care label inside the coat and it rang up as $19.99. Yes, that would be NINETEEN DOLLARS AND NINETY-NINE CENTS. For a friggin’ wool coat!

The lady at the cash register was like, you know that’s going to be a final sale. And I responded back with “Oh, don’t worry. I won’t be returning this bad boy!”

So yeah, that’s that… my story about a girl and her love of all things outerwear. Have a similar story to share? I’d love to hear it! It’ll make me feel better (read: less guilty) knowing there’s someone else out there who loves coats as much as I do!

Philosophy Melting Marshmallow beauty products

Introducing Philosophy's "Melting Marshmallow" beauty products...

Introduction

Without getting into details, work has been pretty crazy these past couple of weeks! Lots of stuff have suddenly happened in my industry, and we’re just trying to make sense of everything.

What does that translate to? Well, yesterday I found myself struggling to relax after work… my usual combo of watching TV with my hubby/playing with our pet bunny/knitting (see, I can multitask!) just wasn’t working. What I needed was a nice, warm bubble bath.

Welcome to another entry in the “A Girl’s Love Affair With…” blog series. This time? The girl (myself) is in love with bubble baths!

Style post bulletin board - Philosophy Melting Marshmallow beauty products

Today's featured top fashion find: Toasty & deliciously scrumptious Philosophy Melting Marshmallow beauty products!

Philosophy Melting Marshmallow Bath and Beauty Product Review

I’ve already blogged before about my love of bubble baths, and how excited I was to be able to have more of them in our new apartment.

Back then, my scents du jour were Bath and Body WorksJapanese Cherry Blossom, Warm Vanilla Sugar, and White Citrus.

Since then, I’ve had the chance to restock my supply of yummy scented bubble baths. I stopped by Sephora last December during their Boxing Week sale event, and was pleasantly surprised to discover a whole bunch of their holiday-themed beauty products were heavily discounted.
