Introduction

Once again, happy Easter long weekend!

Well it’s Easter Sunday, and the holiday long weekend is about to come to a close. So you know what that means! That’s right, it’s time for the conclusion to my 2-Day Miniseries Celebrating All Things “Bunneh!”

If you’ll recall, yesterday (for Part 1) I had featured a selection of my favorite lolbunny pictures from the I Can Has Cheezburger website.

Well, today’s post is all about Oolong, that “Pancake Bunny” from Hokkaido, Japan that became an instant Internet sensation back in 2001-2002 for possessing the ability to balance any object or food item on his head.

Unfortunately, poor Oolong died on January 7, 2003… but his legacy lives on thanks to the hundreds of photographs taken by owner Hironori Akutagawa while he was still alive (all with the rabbit balancing random stuff on his head, of course).

Oolong the Pancake Bunny from Japan

Here's the pic that made Oolong famous!

And like I said, although Oolong was made famous for being the “Pancake Bunny,” he can definitely balance more than just a pancake on his head! Although most of the objects are food-related, there are some strange ones thrown in there that have nothing to do with pancakes, waffles, or pastries.

You’ll find below a selection of my favorite photos of Oolong, the Pancake Bunny. Enjoy!

Pictures of Oolong, the Pancake Bunny

Note: These pictures are meant to be viewed lightly and humorously. Please don’t consider them as evidence of animal cruelty! I’m a bunny lover and pet owner myself, and I don’t find them offensive… so please don’t as well. Thanks for understanding.

I has a bunny! Cute lolbunny pictures from I Can Has Cheezburger? website part of 2-Day Miniseries on All Things “Bunneh!”

I Has a Bunny Picture from I Can Has Cheezburger website

Kitteh has a bunneh!

Introduction

Happy Easter long weekend, everyone!

I know this holiday means different things to different people, and I’m not here to get into the religious part of it. But as a lover of bunnies (and proud owner of the cutest bunny in the whole wide world, no exaggeration!), I knew I had to blog about the bunny aspect of Easter.

No other holiday celebrates the love of bunnies as much as Easter, that’s for sure! Everyone knows all about the Easter bunny, and who hasn’t eaten a chocolate bunny or two in their childhood?

Whether you’re a fellow lover of lagomorphs, proud owner of your own pet rabbit, or enjoy giggling over lolbunny pictures online… if you answered yes to any of those three statements, then you’ll likely appreciate my 2-Day Miniseries on All Things “Bunneh!”

First up? Get ready for a blog post devoted to nonstop cute lolbunny pictures from the I Can Has Cheezburger website!

For those of you unfamiliar with I Can Has Cheezburger, it’s basically a site devoted to listing adorable pictures of kitties (a.k.a. “kittehs“), dogs (a.k.a. “dawgs“), bunnies (a.k.a. “bunnehs“) and other animals… and they add hilarious captions to each picture that are intentionally misspelled and grammatically incorrect, turning them into “lolcats” or “loldogs,” etc.

The end result? Pure genius. I mean, you can’t go wrong with a formula based around cute animals and funny one-liners!

Like I had said, I Can Has Cheezburger is built around a language made up of intentionally misspelled & grammatically incorrect words and phrases. These gibberish words make up “lolspeak” (a.k.a. “lolcat“) defined as:

“A language built on bad grammar and Internet slang” -I Can Has Cheezburger website

Want to know how to speak lolcat? According to this wikiHow page, it’s quite easy!

Basic steps to speaking Lolcat:

  • Rearrange order of words (including using incorrect plurals & past tense)
  • Make nouns adjectives (including using improper nouns)
  • Drop articles (“a” or “the”) & add “-age” to end of nouns
  • Use “young” words
  • Use “with” inappropriately
  • Go to a translation website and translate English to Japanese, then copy the text & translate back from Japanese to English
  • Mispel stuf
  • Use Internet abbreviations & misspell them
  • EXCLAIM!!!
  • Use “teh” & not “the”
  • Use “z” & not “s”
  • Pluralize verbs

My very first viewing of a “lolbunny” pic is the classic “I Has a Bunny!” picture from 2007. Since then, the site has showcased numerous hilariously captioned photos of “bunnehs.” Listed below are a selected few that are favorites of mine, featured on my blog as part of my 2-Day Miniseries on All Things “Bunneh!” Enjoy.

Google’s Panda algorithm update officially arrives in Canada. I blame Stephen Harper.

Google Panda Algorithm Update Logo

Google rolled out a massive algorithm update in 2011, commonly referred to as the "Panda"

Whether you’re a part of the SEO world or you’re a webmaster of a significant-sized American website… you’ve likely been keeping up with Google’s recent yo-yoing algorithm antics.

Unofficially referred to as The Panda Update, Google’s algorithm update that targeted “thin content farming sites” initially rolled out on February 24, 2011, and affected US sites only.

“Many of the changes we make are so subtle that very few people notice them. But in the last day or so we launched a pretty big algorithmic improvement to our ranking—a change that noticeably impacts 11.8% of our queries—and we wanted to let people know what’s going on. This update is designed to reduce rankings for low-quality sites—sites which are low-value add for users, copy content from other websites or sites that are just not very useful. At the same time, it will provide better rankings for high-quality sites—sites with original content and information such as research, in-depth reports, thoughtful analysis and so on.” -Official Google Blog

Google Panda Algorithm Update Comic

Depending on whether or not you've been directly affected by Google's "Panda" update, this comic may be either extremely funny... or extremely ironic.

Here in Canada, we knew the time would come when Google’s mighty “Panda” would inevitably cross the border and bitch-slap us up north.

Well, the day has finally arrived… Google’s Panda algorithm update has officially landed in Canada.

“Over a month ago we introduced an algorithmic improvement designed to help people find more high-quality sites in search. Since then we’ve gotten a lot of positive responses about the change: searchers are finding better results, and many great publishers are getting more traffic.

Today we’ve rolled out this improvement globally to all English-language Google users.” -Official Google Blog

And you know what I think about all of this? Four words: I blame Stephen Harper.*

I Blame Stephen Harper for Google Panda Algorithm Update Arriving in Canada

Google's "Panda" algorithm update arrives in Canada... and guess what? I blame Stephen Harper.*

If you’ll recall, I had reported back in November 2010 that Canada was in talks with China to bring over 2 giant pandas.

In this Macleans article from the same time period, it’s pretty much confirmed that Harper was the sole person responsible for persuading China to “rent out a pair of giant pandas for extended stays at zoos in Ontario, Alberta and Quebec.” How did he do it, you ask? Well, as Macleans journalist Scott Feschuk puts it… simply by “kissing ass.”

So there you have it. I know Google’s “Panda” refers to the nickname of a Google engineer… as opposed to the fuzzy-wuzzy black and white pseudo-bears that Harper wants to bring into Canada on rent from China. Nevertheless, I’m going to state it here first and officially make the connection between the two!

So there you have it. According to my twisted logic, Stephen Harper is responsible for bringing Google’s Panda algorithm update to Canada. Blast him!!!

*Note: OK, obviously this blog post was written as a joke, and isn’t meant to be taken seriously. Please don’t read into it literally! Much thanks.

Tried out Martha Stewart’s Gratinéed Macaroni and Cheese with Tomatoes recipe using Scoobi Do pasta (no relation to the cartoon dog!)

The Martha Stewart Living Cookbook - The New Classics cookbook

Just dug up "The Martha Stewart Living Cookbook: The New Classics"

I’ve been the proud owner of “The Martha Stewart Living Cookbook: The New Classics” for a couple years now, but still I’ve barely scratched the surface in terms of trying out all of the recipes! And don’t even get me started on The Original Classics, the first volume that corresponds with the New Classics… I haven’t even gotten around to purchasing that one!

Anyway, I decided to start cracking into the book again a couple days ago, and kicked it off by trying out Martha Stewart’s “Gratinéed Macaroni and Cheese with Tomatoes” recipe.

I was drawn to the recipe because it asked for 4 cups of grated sharp white Cheddar cheese… which I took as an excuse to load up the pasta with 4 cups of freshly grated aged white Cheddar, and I looooooove aged Cheddar cheese!

Martha Stewarts Gratineed Macaroni and Cheese with Tomatoes recipe

Martha Stewart's "Gratineed Macaroni and Cheese with Tomatoes"

Although the dish is essentially just Mac & Cheese, I liked the fact that it was a fancy, glorified Mac & Cheese… I mean, just look at the name. “Gratinéed?” I’m pretty sure that’s just French for cooking “with a browned crust of bread crumbs and grated cheese!”

One last thing… when shopping for macaroni pasta at the grocery store, I stumbled upon “Scoobi Do” pasta.

I got a kick out of that one, I couldn’t believe there was a type of pasta that practically shared the same name as the cartoon dog! But did some digging, and apparently there’s no relation between the pasta and the dog (according to Yahoo! Answers, anyway).

Scoobi Do pasta - no relation to the cartoon dog

Look, there's a type of macaroni pasta called "Scoobi Do!" No relation to the cartoon dog, though.

Martha Stewart’s “Gratineed Macaroni and Cheese with Tomatoes” Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 7 tbsp unsalted butter, plus more for dish
  • 1 1/4 cups small pieces torn baguette
  • 1 tbsp chopped fresh thyme
  • Coarse salt & freshly ground pepper
  • 1 lb elbow macaroni or other short, tubular pasta
  • 1 qt milk
  • 5 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
  • 4 cups grated sharp white Cheddar cheese
  • 1 lb red & yellow tomatoes, cut into 1″ pieces

Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 375°F
  • Butter a 9″ x 13″ baking dish or 3 qt casserole dish; set aside
  • Melt 2 tbspn butter; pour over bread in medium bowl
  • Add 1 tsp thyme, 1/2 tsp salt & 1/4 tsp pepper to bread topping mixture and toss to mix
  • Bring large pot of water to a boil; add salt
  • Cook pasta until just softening (about 2-3 min); drain & rinse
  • Warm milk ina saucepan over medium heat
  • Cook, whisking, until bubbling & thickened (about 8-10 min)
  • Remove from heat
  • Add tsp salt, 1/2 tsp pepper, remaining 2 tsp thyme, nutmeg & cheese
  • Stir until cheese is melted
  • Stir pasta & tomatoes into cheese sauce
  • Pour into buttered dish & sprinkle with bread topping
  • Bake until bubbling & golden (about 30 min)
  • Let cool slightly before serving

Makes: 6 to 8 servings

Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows (Part 1) @ midnight tonight! The beginning of the end is here.

Harry Potter Comic

Soon, there won't be any more Harry Potter movies to watch in the theaters (tear!).

It’s true. The day has arrived. The beginning of the end is here (Tear!).

Not sure about you, but tonight at midnight my plans involve me parking my butt at my neighborhood Cineplex theater for 2 hours and 30 minutes. Why? To see the long-awaited Part 1 of Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows, of course!

I’m so going to turn into a dork tonight. Y’know why I’m a dork? Because this “Graphical Representation of the Reader’s Level of Excitement as a Function of Harry Potter Book Completion” image had me gasping for air from laughing too hard when I first saw it (thanks, Jesse, for hooking me up!). Are you an HP dork too? Then check it out:

Graphical representation of the readers level of excitement as a function of Harry Potter book completion

Are you a Harry Potter fan? Then you'll die laughing, thanks to this graph. Trust me.

News Update @ 4am on 11/19/2010!

Note: I’m going to go into describing parts of the movie here. If you’re planning on watching the movie and don’t want me to spoil it for you, then I’d suggest you stop reading… now.

Karina in a Harry Potter Muggle shirt

That's me in a Muggle shirt! (Yes, I know I'm a dork)

So yeah, just came back from watching the movie and I loooooooooooved it! I found that for this one especially, you really needed to have read the books… or at least have a better-than-basic understanding of what happened previously in all 6 prior movies.

Since it is the last book that we’re talking about here, J.K. Rowling pretty much goes in and wraps up every single loose end… which explains why you see numerous returning characters, plus a continuous stream of references to anything and everything ever mentioned in the previous book.

Even though I’ve dragged my husband to see all 6 previous Harry Potter movies before, he came out of Part 1 of the Deathly Hallows today basically without a clue as to what had just went down (and I don’t think he honestly cared enough to try and figure it out!). But being the awesome husband that he is, he keeps going with me to each Harry Potter movie anyway, every time it comes out!

It was funny when the ending to Part 1 occurred tonight, everyone shrieked in disappointment at once. That’s what happens though when you split a book into 2!!! The 1st part of the 2-part movie will inevitably end in dissatisfaction.

Although, one thing did shock me. I had no idea how emotional I would get over the death that occurred at the end of this movie. It follows the same formula as the past couple of movies, where someone of significance ends up dying at the conclusion of that movie. For example, Sirius Black started the formula off by dying at the end of Order of the Phoenix, and of course, who could forget Dumbledore dying at the end of Half Blood Prince?

Like I said, there’s an equivalent death at the end of Part 1 of the Deathly Hallows, and quite the sad one, too. One you would have never guessed as being up there in significance along with Dumbledore and Sirius.

Anyway, at this point I’m pretty much just ranting about Harry Potter ’cause I came out of that theater on such a manic high. It’s past 4am now and I really should be going to sleep in order to make it to work… Blah. But overall, awesome night. Now I want to read Deathly Hallows again…
