Treble Charger Reunion Show Review

Any Treble Charger fans out there?

Remember such memorable singles sung by Bill Priddle as “Red” and “Morale“… or such anthemic hits featuring Greig Nori as the frontman like “Friend of Mine” and “American Psycho?”

Well, here’s a bit of nostalgia for those of you who grew up listening to “Canadian pop-rock music” during the 90s like myself!

Before I go any further, my apologies for the timeliness of this blog post. I haven’t been the greatest at keeping up with blogging about certain events closer to when they had actually occurred (or at the very least, soon after the dates of their occurrence!). Some prime examples? Blogging about the Toronto Spring 2012 edition of the One of a Kind Show and Sale that took place at the end of March, as well as the Toronto Spring 2012 edition of the Creativ Festival craft show that took place at the end of April. Note: Blog posts on both events coming soon to the Knitting & Purling blog, I swear!

Anyway, like I was saying… Treble Charger definitely made their mark in the Canadian music scene during the 1990s and early 2000s. But after 14 years of producing great Canadian pop-rock songs, they decided to break up in 2006.

This was devastating for my husband and myself! Why, you ask? Because during the early years of our relationship (I’m talking about the time period coinciding with the release of Wide Awake Bored in 2000 and Detox in 2002), we had spent quite some time following Treble Charger around as they toured Southern Ontario.

To this day, I still have a mental connection between watching Treble Charger concerts and the beginning stages of my relationship with my husband. And that’s why when I found out they were reuniting in 2012, with their first performance in years to take place at The Phoenix Concert Theatre for Canadian Music Week 2012? I was ecstatic! I knew I had to attend.

It wasn’t until I was watching the show that I realized how much I had missed them. The Treble Charger reunion concert was filled to the brim with both hit singles and obscure album tracks for the die-hard fan… which definitely made for a happy Karina!

Black Dr Martens women’s Phina tall leather buckle boot review: They bring out the 90s grunge rock girl from deep within me! (Part 2 in my hunt for footwear perfection)

Introduction

So I’ve already alluded to my obsession with shoes in a previous blog post on my discovery of the genius behind Kenneth Cole New York Exclusive 925 Technology shoes.

I initially discovered (and purchased!) them last year while doing a little pre-Boxing Day shoe shopping… and have been wearing them to work and just out and about ever since because they’re THAT comfortable. So chalk Kenneth Cole New York Exclusive 925 Technology footwear as my first find so far in my recent search for the treasure map to footwear perfection.

Now as for find #2? That would be my newly purchased (well, at this point it’s been 4 months… so not really THAT new) black Dr Martens women’s Phina tall leather buckle boots!

Style post bulletin board - Black Dr Martens womens Phina tall leather buckle boots

Today's featured top fashion find: Black Dr Martens women's Phina tall leather buckle boots!

Black Dr Martens Women’s Phina Tall Leather Buckle Boot Review

For years, I’ve been on a hunt for the perfect pair of black leather knee-high boots… so I would have the option to wear skirts and dresses in the cold fall or winter months. I wasn’t looking for a pair or brown leather boots, nor was I looking for something too overly dressy with a high heel (since I already have both of those, married together in the form of brown knee-high pointed-toe stiletto leather boots). I wanted something super casual, super comfortable, yet still uber stylish and possess that unique flair that I tend to gravitate towards when I shop for footwear.

Like I said, I’ve been seeking these perfect black boots literally for YEARS. But I’ve never been able to find anything I like because most of the ones I had looked at in the past were either sort of cheap looking (that’s one of my biggest style pet peeves… cheap-looking fashion items), or had ugly clunky heels that make them look sort of cloggish… if you know what I mean.

But lo and behold! Last year at Boxing Week when I found myself looking in shoe stores, trying to use the mall gift card that my boss had given me for Christmas? I struck footwear perfection gold.

Introducing the boots of my dreamswomen’s Dr Martens Phina tall buckle boots in black!

Hunt for the treasure map to footwear perfection - Dr Martens womens Phina black tall buckle boots

These are literally the black leather knee-high boots of my dreams!

Something about these boots just completely awoke the inner 90s grunge rock girl from deep within me. That’s right, back in the 90s during my angst-filled teenage years? I was all about alternative/grunge/heavy rock music. My favorite band of all time has always been (and always will be… to this day!) The Smashing Pumpkins. Heck, I slept on the streets overnight outside Toronto’s MuchMusic building just to see them perform at the MuchMusic Video Awards show one year! I even traveled far and wide (well, by which I mean Chicago & Columbus) to see my idol of all idols perform (I still ♥ you, Billy Corgan!). And not to mention my love for Nine Inch Nails, Tool, A Perfect Circle, Depeche Mode, The Pixiex, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Audioslave, Rage Against the Machine, and more.

Anyway, the second I laid eyes on them at my neighbourhood SoftMoc, I knew I had to buy them (even though they were a BIT pricier than what I normally would like to spend on average on a pair of shoes or boots). It worked out perfectly because they were also on sale because of Boxing Week sales… and by using my mall gift card, the price really was quite negligible! (At least, that’s how i justified it in my head! Should be noted that’s how I justify ALL footwear purchases that I make…)

Here are some stats and highlights…

  • Approximate shaft height = 15″ tall
  • Approximate circumference (i.e. around upper thigh) = 16″ long
  • Issued under UK sizing

Let me just say this: After purchasing my coveted black Phina Doc Martens boots? I ended up wearing them as my “winter boots” every day throughout all of winter 2012… and my feet never complained once!

They felt like they were cushioned in memory foam pillows or something thanks to the super soft footbeds that mould around your heels and arches. I didn’t even really treat the leather exterior, although I probably should have if I wanted them to last. They started gradually showing the expected wear and tear most leather would exhibit after several months of extended use… but that just gave it an extra vintage look that actually made the boots looked even better than when brand new! Practically felt like I had them since the early 1990s from the era of grunge rock. I almost felt like I should be pairing my Phina Doc Martens with a babydoll dress and pretend to be Brenda or Kelly from the high school era of the original 90210! Almost.

Oh, also! The whole time I was decked out in my Doctor Martens, I realized something. Never in my life had I received so many compliments on one specific fashion item before, as I did with my Phina black buckle boots! It seemed like everywhere I went, people I knew and strangers alike kept constantly coming up to me just to tell me they LOVED my boots. Definitely made me love them more!

So yeah, anyone out there who’s looking for a really excellent pair of women’s leather knee-high black boots? I definitely recommend these black Dr Martens women’s Phina tall leather boots! Because you just can’t go wrong with Doctor Martens boots when it comes to quality footwear.

One last note: I normally wear a size 7 when it comes to women’s shoes… but these boots fit me in a size 6 (this might be because they’re listed in UK sizing?). Anyway, just keep in mind the sizes may run a bit larger than average if you’re seriously planning on buying these boots (which you should!).

My rating score? I give these boots a rating of 5 out of 5!

Officially a new home owner! (A deeper look into a home decorator’s thought process on choosing paint colors)

The Need to Express hiatus comic

Apparently I was engulfed by The Hiatus Monster for the last 7 months! Whoops?

Guess what, everyone? I’m baaack!

So I know I’ve gone on breaks from blogging before, but never to this extent! I basically haven’t blogged since last Easter, making my latest hiatus from blogging a massive 7 month-long gap. Crazy how time flies!

Why the long break? Well, a variety of stuff happened that preoccupied my time and/or made it impossible to keep up with my blog. But the main reason? Definitely The. Big. Move. this past summer when my husband and I finally bought our own house.

Now, the two of us have gone through our share of moves (I think together as a couple, we’ve moved 6 times within 10 years), so that part isn’t new. But this time it was WAY different. Why? Because we weren’t renting anymore, and the fact that we were moving to a house we can call our own meant I could do whatever I wanted to it!

Behr Premium Plus Paint Color Center (2000+ colors)

Being a new home owner? That means a 3-storey house is now my very own blank canvas! First off, drooling over 2000+ colors of Behr Premium Plus paint at Home Depot. Mmmmm...

Actually, we were really lucky because our new house had been completely renovated from top to bottom before we moved in (the last owner only had the house for 6 months, never lived in it, and bought it just to renovate/flip it). I’m talking like brand new kitchen appliances (with the factory stickers still on them!) and cabinets, newly painted walls and flooring on all 3 levels, all new bath fixtures… the works. So while the house may be old, it definitely felt more like we were living in a new one from the inside.

However, the home decorator in me refused to live in a clinical, cookie-cutter home with off-white walls.

There was a two month-long period between when we bought the house and when we actually moved in (we had to wait until the end of our prior rental agreement before moving in). During that time, I think I went insane obsessively planning every aspect of what I wanted to do with each room in the house.

5 Behr Premium Plus Paint color swatches chosen for my paint colors

After endless debating, I decided on these 5 color swatches for our new house: 1) Coral Dune for my crafts room, 2) Bicycle Yellow for the kitchen, 3) Cabbage Green for our master bedroom, 4) Spa for the living room & 5) Monet Lily for the walk-in closet/bedroom

I used online room planning tools to map out (to scale!) exactly where each furniture item will be. I scoured Every. Single. Furniture. Store. and bought all our furniture ahead of time before we even moved, because I was so impatient (and by doing so, I ended up having to stash all the items in the front hallway of our old condo for the last month we were there, making it impossible to get around!).

Knitting and Purling Blog home page screenshot image

My five chosen paint colors of light peach, yellow, green, turquoise and bluish purple? They shouldn't come as that much of a surprise... I mean, just look at the design and colors of my blog!

And lastly, I started my very own interior design scrapbook where I compiled my chosen paint chips that I had picked for each room, plus home decorating magazine cut-outs featuring pictures of rooms that I felt were inspirational to what I wanted to do with my own house.

Yup, I basically became full-blown OCD!

Anyway, I ended up painting five (yes, FIVE!) rooms before moving in… each one a different color, not much different from the color scheme that I have currently set up for this Knitting & Purling blog site. Y’know, very whimsical… fun… colorful… without being too in your face. Pastels, but not too light.

Sample room painted with Behr Premium Plus paint in Monet Lily

Sample picture of a room painted with Monet Lily Behr Premium Plus paint, the color I chose for my walk-in closet

So to start off, I decided to turn our third smallest bedroom into a massive walk-in closet for my ginormous collection of clothes, handbags and shoes.

I’m talking a wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling massive 3- to 4-tier IKEA Pax wardrobe system taking up one whole wall, a glass-door dresser lined row after row with handbags, and custom horizontal shelves (taking up the entire width of the wall) built one on top of the other to house nothing but shoes. Hey, as I’ve said all along, I’m addicted to shopping… especially when it comes to fashion!

Previously, I would tend to shy away from the color purple. Whether as a color choice for clothing, fashion accessories or jewelry… and definitely not as paint color selection.

But over the last year I’ve really warmed up to the color purple. I’ve grown to embrace all shades too, from fuchsia to deeper royal purples. But something about a subtle bluish purple (especially in a lighter shade) always screamed elegance & style to me. Which is why I had decided to paint my walk-in closet with Monet Lily Premium Plus paint by Behr. (Hey, if I had my way, I’d be pairing that with a chic white chandelier ceiling lamp!)

Sample room painted with Behr Premium Plus paint in Coral Dune

Sample picture of a room painted with Coral Dune Behr Premium Plus paint, the color I chose for crafts room

As for the second bedroom? Well that has basically transformed into a giant crafts room.

Shopping aside, arts and crafts is my life (Hey, it’s even better when you combine the two! Mmmmm… shopping for handmade goods by local artisans = ♥)

Don’t believe me? Check out my newly launched KnittingNPurling Etsy store, the place where I sell my handcrafted jewelry and fashion accessories.

From my massive yarn collection to my mom’s sewing machine to my two (that’s right, plural!) seamstress dress forms to an entire wall covered with rows on top of rows of towel rails lined with enough craft punches to last a lifetime to more jewelry making supplies than I would ever be able to use… all of that are located within this room. Phew!

And since it was my crafts room, it only made sense that I painted it with Coral Dune Premium Plus paint by Behr… a coral/peach/salmon pink color that’s closely related to the main, defining color of my Knitting & Purling blog website (which is mainly devoted to arts and crafts, so it made sense).

Sample room painted with Behr Premium Plus paint in Cabbage Green

Sample picture of a room painted with Cabbage Green Behr Premium Plus paint, the color I chose for our master bedroom

Side note #1: Apparently I’m not planning on having children anytime soon, since there’s no room left for a baby! Well, not in the near future anyway.

As for the master bedroom? I didn’t have to think twice about this one; I knew it would be painted with my favorite color: Green.

I was thinking either Asian green tea (the color of my room at my parents’ house) or a light grass green. I ended up choosing Cabbage Green Premium Plus paint by Behr. It’s light, airy, kind of spring-like and definitely refreshing. Completely calming, and such a great color to wake up to and see first thing in the morning.

Side note #2: In case you’re thinking I’ve been completely selfish and have shut my husband out with all this girlie stuff, don’t worry! Our entire basement? His very own mancave. It’s got a TV hooked up to video game consoles like the NES, SNES, GameCube & Wii. It houses our wall-to-wall & floor-to-ceiling massive collection of CDs (seriously, we’re THAT into music), his vinyls, a turntable, a dartboard, and (the pièce de résistance!) a pool table. Find yourself in our neighborhood? Please drop by, guests are welcomed! (Well, maybe only restricted to those of you whom my husband & I know personally…)

Sample room painted with Behr Premium Plus paint in Bicycle Yellow

Sample picture of a room painted with Bicycle Yellow Behr Premium Plus paint, the color I chose for our kitchen/dining room

Going back to the choosing paint colors, I had decided to paint our kitchen/dining room using Bicycle Yellow Premium Plus paint by Behr.

This was also a no-brainer. I knew I wanted a color that was bright, cheery, appetizing and stimulated the taste buds. And guess what? I got exactly that with this bright (yet creamy) & sunny Bicycle Yellow paint color.

Lastly, there’s the room I knew my husband and I would be spending the vast majority of our time in. I’m talking about the living room, of course.

Sample room painted with Behr Premium Plus paint in Spa color

Sample picture of a room painted with Spa Behr Premium Plus paint, the color I chose for our living room

Why? Many reasons, but to list a few… it houses our main TV set, our wall-to-wall & floor-to-ceiling DVD/Blu-ray media collection, our brand spankin’ new La-Z-Boy power control sofa recliner… and, oh yeah, our resident bunnies! Enough said.

And for a room as important as the living room? I chose to paint it in my second favorite color of all time (after my number one favorite, that being green): Turquoise, in the form of Spa Premium Plus Paint by Behr.

I find blues go well with everything. Especially greenish blues. A good teal can be complemented by shades of olive greens and royal purples (which, you’ve guessed it, is the color scheme I had decided for our living room). It sounds kinda weird, but trust me, it works.

Anyway, the long and short of it? It took 2 months after we took possession of the house before it was ready for a housewarming party/guests. And even still there are things left to do, such as putting up our wedding photos from Florence. But the great news is, technically we have all the time in the world to do it now that we can call this house completely ours. Hooray to that!

Super sorry for my uber long post. But hey, it DID take 7 solid months for me to get back into blogging, so you shouldn’t be surprised! As always, thanks again for your interest.

Many cheers,
Karina

Gonna get some haters… but we successfully landed tickets to Charlie Sheen’s “Violent Torpedo of Truth” show in Toronto!

Charlie Sheens Violent Torpedo of Truth show

Charlie Sheen's "Violent Torpedo of Truth" tour poster

OK, so like I had mentioned in the title of this post… I know I’m going to get some haters for this.

But my husband and I are in the pro-Charlie Sheen camp (we’ve been following his antics on a daily basis, I must admit). And when we found out Charlie Sheen’s “Violent Torpedo of Truth: Defeat is Not an Option Tour 2011″ show was coming to Toronto, we knew we had to get tickets.

Apparently, tickets to his shows in the States were selling out within minutes of when they went on sale… so I didn’t exactly have high hopes of landing tickets to the Toronto show (especially since the T.O. show was at Massey Hall, a teeny tiny theatre that’s so small, it can only fit 2800 people!).

However, I’m no spring chicken when it comes to scooping up “high demand” tickets the second they go on sale on Ticketmaster. My husband and I have been to our fair share of concerts throughout our teenage years… even up until present day. And I was always the one in charge of purchasing tickets.

So anyway, tickets to Charlie Sheen’s “Violent Torpedo of Truth” Toronto show went on sale today, and I’m pretty sure they sold out in 4 minutes. But that’s perfectly fine for us, ’cause I bought our tickets before it sold out! Woo.

That’s right. Come April 14th, we’re going to be guzzlin’ tiger blood, not sleeping (but waiting!), and learning how to “bi-win” from the master Warlock himself.

And who better to describe what the show would be like except Charlie Sheen himself? Check out this quote:

“Will there be surprises? Will there be guests? Will there be mayhem? Will you ask questions? Will you laugh? Will you scream? Will you know the truth? WILL THERE BE MORE?!?! This IS where you will hear the REAL story from the Warlock. Bring it I dare you to keep up with me.” -Charlie Sheen

I cannot wait!

Happy 44th birthday, Billy Corgan! (And, oh yeah, happy St. Patrick’s day!)

St Patricks Day green beer

Green beer... always a St. Patrick's Day tradition!

Gotta love St. Patrick’s Day!

Seeing how green is my favorite color of all time, that just means by default St. Patrick’s Day has gotta be one of my fave holidays.

And how can you not like a holiday where everyone drinks green beer?

OK, yeah, don’t answer that. The concept is definitely gross if you’re not drunk, I do admit.

In fact, St. Patrick’s Day is so beloved that even a metropolitan city like Chicago goes all out to celebrate it… by dyeing its river green!

Chicago river dyed green for St Patricks Day

Every year, Chicago dyes the river green in honor of St. Patrick's Day

Seriously, Chicago has been doing it since 1962 (according to Wikipedia). Apparently, they used to use 100 pounds of vegetable dye and the river would stay green for a week.

Nowadays, they only use 40 pounds of dye and the river stays green for only a few hours. Still, that’s gotta be an amazing thing to see!

But the main reason why I love this day? It has nothing to do with leprechauns and the color green… although it does have to do with the Irish! One specific Irish person, in fact.

Happy birthday Billy Corgan - XOXO Karina

Happy 44th birthday, Billy!

Who would that be, you ask?

Why, that would be the role model of my youth, my favorite musician of all time… frontman/vocalist/guitarist of The Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Corgan!

And so… Mr. William Patrick Corgan, I’d like to wish you a happy 44th birthday!

XOXO, Karina

Here are some birthday tweets from Billy himself! Enjoy.
